What is the SEIU Convention?

Every four years, SEIU members who are elected by members of their local to serve as delegates come together to celebrate and set the direction of our Union. The Convention is the highest decision-making body in our Union. It decides the program and resources of our Union. The convention is also where we elect full-time officers, International Executive Board members, and the Board of Auditors.

SEIU Local 49 is entitled to an estimated 15 delegates.  The Local 49 Constitution and Bylaws assign four delegates for union-wide Officers. The remaining 11 delegates slots are filled by election from all of our eligible members in good standing by sector:

  • Janitors (3 delegates)

  • Security (1 delegate)

  • Healthcare - non-Kaiser (3 delegates)

  • Kaiser (3 delegates)

  • Workers United, Allied & Airport Service Providers (1 delegate)

  • Any member can stop by and cast a ballot; Identification will be required (work badge or other ID).

Ballots will be counted by members of the Elections Committee on Tuesday, February 13, 2023 and those elected will be notified no later than Friday, February 16.

SEIU will be notified of the SEIU 49 Convention Delegates on or before the deadline of April 20, 2024.

Members must be in good standing to vote and will only be allowed to vote once.

Members will vote for Convention Delegates that are in the same “industry” in which they are employed. They will be able to vote for up to the total number of delegates from that industry. Example: If a member is employed at Kaiser, they will get to vote for up to 3 nominees for Kaiser. If a member is employed in Janitorial, they will get to vote for up to 3 candidates from Janitorial.

Runners up by vote count will be considered alternates for the convention.

    9. Any non-emergency cancellations costs will be the responsibility of the member. This would include flight and hotel costs.
