Union Strong for the Future: Modernizing Our Union Constitution & Bylaws
No matter what we look like, where we come from, or what job we do, working people deserve dignity, safety, and a voice on the job by organizing their union. But powerful interests try to divide us and weaken our ability to stand up for what we need. That’s why we’re taking action to ensure efficient use of our resources while strengthening and protecting our local Union — by updating SEIU Local 49’s Constitution and Bylaws. These updates will make our Union more modern, more inclusive, and more transparent — so we can keep fighting and winning together.
A lot has changed in the last 15 years. Think about it: 15 years ago, there was no Zoom, most of us didn’t have smartphones, and many of our strongest union leaders today hadn’t even started their jobs yet. Just like our workplaces and organizing have evolved, it’s time for our union’s rules to catch up. We’re also updating outdated language to make sure everyone in our union is respected, no matter our race, gender, or where we were born, so that every member is recognized and respected for who they are.
One important note with all these changes: The proposed amendments to the bylaws do not increase member dues; in fact, this ensures no one will pay initiation fees and dues at the same time!
This is your union — and your voice matters. That’s why we’re asking all members to vote on these changes.
Let’s show our strength this Labor Day — from healthcare workers in the valley and beyond, to janitors, laundry workers, and security officers at job sites across the region, we’re coming together across race, background, and job title to build a stronger, more united SEIU Local 49.
