Welcome to our 2026–2029 SEIU 49 Executive Board!
Dear SEIU 49 Family,
I’m honored to be recently re-elected as President of our 15,000-member union! I appreciate everyone who participate in our union’s democratic election process. I’m proud to welcome our newly-elected Executive Board. These leaders come from across SEIU 49 — healthcare workers, janitors, security officers, airport workers, manufacturing workers, and others who show up every day to keep our communities safe, healthy, and clean. This Executive Board is a group of members who have a proven track record of showing up and standing up and I’m excited to lead our union for the next three years alongside them.
Our Executive Board plays an important role in guiding the direction of our union and making sure all our members are heard. More than 90% of SEIU 49 members will be in union contract bargaining in the next 3 years. Strong leadership and active member participation will matter more than ever. It’s a busy year already; just days ago, we had a big victory when Samaritan Lebanon Hospital workers voted 133 YES to 6 NO to join our union—that’s a strong start to our Samaritan bargaining. Legacy Hospital members are gearing up for a fight, PDX Airport workers are about to launch their contract survey, and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center caregivers are working on their first contact. I know Kaiser, Master Janitorial, and Security are all right around the corner, and we will be ready—by starting ready.
The road ahead is not easy. As workers, we are facing growing pressure to work harder for less money as we see billionaires and bosses getting richer by the minute. There are federal policies that threaten workers, unions, immigrants, critical services and funding for our jobs and the communities we serve. Our history shows that when union members stand together, organize, and take action, we can overcome even the toughest challenges.
Working together with this newly elected Executive Board, we will continue organizing, bargaining strong contracts, developing new leaders, voting for people and issues that matter and standing up for every worker in our union — no matter our job, where we come from, the color of our skin or who we love.
When we stand together, we win.
In solidarity,
Meg Niemi
President, SEIU Local 49
