Welcome to SEIU Local 49, from President Meg Niemi
On behalf of our entire membership, I would like to welcome you to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 49. As a member of SEIU 49, you are part of a vibrant and democratic organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of working families. We are over 15,000 healthcare workers, janitors, and security officers in Oregon and Southwest Washington who are coming together to win livable wages, affordable healthcare benefits, and job security, and to create a more just society.
We are stronger together, and I encourage you to be an active member of our union. You will have the opportunity to help enforce your contract in your worksite, organize new members into our union, and advocate at our State Capitols to pass laws that help working families.

Protect Our Patients, Protect Our Jobs, Contribute to COPE
Understaffing is bad for patients, and it’s bad for workers. Hospitals have a responsibility to patients, caregivers, and our community to ensure that facilities are staffed appropriately. However, current staffing laws fall short and do not address many staffing issues we face. Some staff who support patient care are not included under current law, and the laws that do exist can be poorly enforced. As union members, we can come together and make the changes we need—in our worksites and in our politics. We’ve done it before, and we can do it now!
