ServiceMaster Janitors on Strike
Janitors at the downtown Union Bank of California organized a three-day strike in February to protest ServiceMaster of Swan Island's refusal to recognize their union and bargain with them about wages and benefits.
The company stands accused of unilaterally eliminating their employer-funded health care and other benefits, forcing some janitors to rely on taxpayer-funded programs for their health care.

Eric Butler, a janitor on strike at the Union Bank of California, was a member of SEIU Local 49 until ServiceMaster of Swan Island took over and eliminated the union. “I’m out here because we have got to stand up for ourselves. I have worked here for 14 years and then one day I wake up without a pension or health benefits. That just isn’t right.” Butler continued, “ServiceMaster refuses to bargain so we had to go on strike.”
When Swan Island lowers standards by eliminating benefits for janitors in Portland, we all pay the price.
Send a message to the owners of ServiceMaster of Swan Island. Tell them it's not right to shift the burden of employee health care to taxpayers.
