Healthcare Internal Organizer

Job Description:
SEIU Local 49 is a 13,000-member statewide local union. The Local represents and organizes health care workers and janitors throughout Oregon and southwest Washington and throughout the U.S. We are committed to helping workers fight for social and economic justice on the job and in the community.

Some specific duties shall include:
  • Identify, recruit, and develop worksite leaders in their jobs and communities;
  • Develop and implement effective contract campaign plans;
  • Motivate and inspire workers to build their union in the face of heavy employer opposition;
  • Analytical skills necessary to interpret contract language, investigate and process grievances, prepare contract proposals and bargain, and assist in joint employer/union committees;
  • Engaging workers to support our union’s political program and our union’s external organizing program;
  • Lead and conduct demonstrations, pickets, marches, trainings, meetings, and other events and actions;
  • Work in an environment of supportive and challenging supervision that focuses on both winning for our members and developing staff’s skills and potential as an integral part of what we do;
  • Work on a team that builds the most possible power for our members and conduct internal organizing campaigns that require you to stretch your skills and grow as an organizer;
  • Work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.

  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills, including the ability to successfully relate to persons from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures;
  • Enthusiasm and energy for working with worker leaders to develop their confidence, hope, and skills as worksite leaders;
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and think on your feet;
  • Must have strong judgment and strategic sense;
  • Must be able to perform successfully in both independent and team settings;
  • Must be able to succeed in an environment of accountability in meeting the goals of the campaign;
  • Internal union experience: contract enforcement, bargaining, and experience with grievance procedure;
  • Must be willing to participate in a strong program of staff development that fosters and challenges you to develop your skills, experience, and leadership.
Requirements:
  • Minimum one year of experience in mobilizing or recruiting others in a union or other active organization; minimum 6 months experience working in an internal setting
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and automobile for work use;
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends;
  • Computer literacy
  • Organizing and/or healthcare experience a plus
  • Must be willing to travel regionally and nationally for extended periods of time.
Compensation:
Salary range from $49,402.08 to $82,421.04 depending on experience plus a car allowance, fully paid family healthcare, vacation and sick leave, retirement plans and other benefits.

Property Services Internal Organizer

Location:  Oregon and SW Washington
Job Description:  SEIU Local 49 is a growing union and represents over 13,000 workers based in Portland, Oregon.  The Local represents workers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.  With over 2.2 million members, SEIU is the largest and fastest growing union in the United States.  SEIU Local 49’s member leadership has adopted an aggressive internal organizing and representation program that includes recruiting and developing worksite leaders, building workers’ political power, and strongly representing our members through direct action and organizing.
Some specific duties shall include:
  • Member Resource Center duties may be assigned including answering the MRC line and resolving issues and handling member drop-ins

Organizing Coordinator

Based in Portland, OR

Oregon and Southwest Washington’s union of 13,000 hospital and clinic workers, security officers and janitors is conducting a search for candidates for a staff leadership position. SEIU is leading the fight for a just and vibrant society for all Oregonians, and is committed to building a 21st century union. We seek a highly experienced, dynamic leader who will work with talented member leaders and staff to organize the unorganized.

Organizing Coordinator: Responsible for running the day to day of organizing campaigns through leadership development of staff and worker leaders.

Eligible applicants for the position should have: five or more years of union organizing experience; demonstrated success as a supervisor, including training and developing staff and a history of holding staff, leaders, and self accountable to high standards of performance; the ability to work effectively with other departments within the union and with minimal supervision; and a demonstrated commitment to organizational equity and inclusion. Private sector organizing experienced preferred. Must be willing to travel regionally and nationally for extended periods of time.
