Local 49 "Stronger Than Ever" after fire
An early morning fire October 30th that heavily damaged the lobby of Local 49's union hall will not dampen the spirits or stop the work of members. Over 150 members and supporters gathered recently to send the message that we are stronger than ever, and we will not allow this action to stop the work we do as a union.
“We are gathering this today, one week after the fire, to celebrate our
strength as a union," said Nicole Norton, a health care worker and
member of the Local 49 Executive Board. “We will not allow this action
to slow us down or stop the important work we do as a union.”
At the November 6th rally were members of SEIU Local 49 and Local 503, other unions including ONA, UFCW, AFT, AFL-CIO, and OEA; Jobs with Justice, faith and community leaders; State Representatives Michael Dembrow, Tina Kotek and Jules Kopel Bailey, and staff representing Senator Jeff Merkley and Mayor Sam Adams.
The building will be closed for repairs for a few months. Staff can be reached by email or through the main phone line, 503-236-4949.
"We we will continue working shoulder to shoulder as we rebuild our building, as we pass health care for all and the Employee Free Choice Act, as we support fair taxation by passing Measures 66 and 67, as we fight to better contracts at Freightliner, McKenzie Willamette, Kaiser, ABM schools and St Johns Peace Health,” said Meg Niemi, Local 49 President.
