This week Local 49 members stood up and made a difference – from confronting Representatives in the halls of the Nation’s Capitol, to standing up for families in our community whose homes are in foreclosure. In Washington DC, our members joined thousands of others from across the nation in Taking Back the Capitol, where we demanded that Congress take action to fix the economy and create good jobs for the 99%.
Over the course of the week, our voices were heard in the Capitol as we:
Descended on the Capitol building to meet with Rep. Walden. Walden at first refused a face-to-face meeting but after his constituents refused to leave conceded to meet with them in the hallway outside of his office. Rep. Walden committed to support the extension of unemployment benefits. The delegation expressed their concern for more cuts on services and promised to continue the conversation.
Joined thousands of others on K Street and demanded that Wall Street pay.
Participated in productive problem solving workshops and attended national prayer vigil with unemployed people and faith leaders.
And back home, we joined non-profit organization We Are Oregon and community members in bringing attention to the ongoing foreclosure crisis.
With local, national and global media covering these actions, we delivered a strong message of accountability and proved that when we stand together we make a difference.
