One Week. Three Contract Victories!

In an impressive demonstration of the difference our union makes, Local 49 members at three different worksites settled strong contracts in one week!

Workers at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Reed College, and Oregon State University won strong settlements with zero takeaways .
Given the economic climate, the settlement of contracts that included in many cases, pay raises and extended benefits, demonstrates the strength of our union and underscores the importance of worker solidarity.

“Five weeks ago my co-workers and I joined the Union to make improvements and with this contract we did it! This contract addresses nearly all of our non-economic issues, and puts us on a fair wage scale with raises for all Legacy employees. Many of us will also see step increases and additional bonuses”, said Justin Speers, Patient Access, Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

These contract settlements are also a powerful reminder of how our union’s past fights help to build respect amongst management and employers.

No where was this respect more evident than this year’s contract negotiations with Legacy Emanuel. After a one-day strike in 2005, and another bitter contract fight in 2008, healthcare workers at Legacy were able to settle their contract on time for the first time in over a decade. Knowing the fight our union was capable of, Legacy chose to settle on time and in good faith.

With many contract fights ahead, including the Master Janitorial Contract, today’s victories will help us to continue building strength at the worksite and continue to make a difference for working families in our communities.
The lessons learned of the importance of worker unity, community & political support, and standing up for what is fair are all ones we must all remember.
